Slate or cork

Slate is 1/4" of dark stone with hand chiseled edges, so no two are identical. It is naturally porous, so it absorbs condensation instead of pushing it onto your table, it is heavy enough to stay put when you lift your glass, and the engraving reads bright against the stone. Cork is 3/16" thick, warm-toned and lightweight, it takes a hot mug as happily as a cold glass, it will not clatter on the table, and it cannot chip. Cork is the everyday set; slate is the one you put out for company.
