The dogwood is Virginia's state flower, and in spring the white blossoms show up in yards and along roadsides all over the state. For a first Christmas in a new Virginia home, a dogwood on the tree is a small way to mark the year you moved in.
Here's how to pick a Virginia ornament from our Virginia gifts collection for a new house or apartment.
The dogwood design
Our Old Dominion design pairs the state outline with a cardinal and dogwood blossoms, plus "The Old Dominion" and EST. 1788.
It comes in three ornaments:
- The Old Dominion slate ornament
- The Old Dominion wood ornament
- The Old Dominion leatherette ornament
Pick the material
Slate
Dark natural stone with the design engraved in light, in a 3 or 4 inch round, with a pre-drilled hole and a hanging string. The 3 inch fits into a full tree. The 4 inch reads from across the room and can hang on a door, a mirror or a window all year.
Wood
Light natural wood, 3.5 inches across and about a tenth of an inch thick, with the design engraved dark into the grain. A twine hanger comes already tied on.
Leatherette
A thin 3 3/4 inch disc in black, blue or brown, with a hanging cord. It's shatterproof, so it's the one to hang low if kids or pets are around, and the easiest to mail.
Other ornaments for a new home
Home Sweet Home
For a first house, Home Sweet Home says it outright, with the state shape standing in for the O in HOME. It comes on the Virginia slate Christmas ornament, the Virginia wood Christmas ornament and the Virginia leatherette Christmas ornament. Those also come in our other state designs, like Est. 1788 and VA Initials.

The new city
If the new home is in a city, the skyline marks where. We make slate and wood ornaments for Richmond, Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake.
Sending one back home
For family back where you moved from, the Merry Christmas From Virginia leatherette ornament is the easiest thing to mail at the holidays. The words arch over the state shape, with the state name in script and a laurel wreath underneath.
Start a tradition
A new home is a good time to start adding one ornament every December. The dogwood the first year, the city skyline the next, and the tree starts to tell the story of the house.
Order timing
Ornaments are made to order. Each one is engraved after you buy it and ships within 1 to 5 business days in a protective sleeve. Add carrier transit time, and order early in the season if it needs to arrive by a certain date.
These aren't made in Virginia. We keep plain blanks in stock in our workshop in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Find every Virginia ornament on the Virginia collection page.
