The Mermaid of Hilton Head series, written and illustrated by Nina Leipold. Mermaid Nina used to travel the East Coast with her pod until she stopped at Hilton Head to help the sea turtles and never left. Every book since has sent her after a different problem in the water.

Why they exist

Each story starts with something Nina actually saw happen on or near the beach. The mermaid is the device; the sea turtle nests, the propeller scars and the bleached coral are real.

Hardcover at $17.99 or softcover at $12.99. Same story either way. The hardcover survives a classroom.
